Abstract:After a volcanic eruption on the Island of Tristan da Cunha in 1961, a new harbour was constructed for the re-establishment of the crawfish industry. This harbour was protected by gabions, and was soon extended by adding two dolos breakwaters. After many years of severe storm conditions, these breakwaters are showing signs of damage, which urgently needs to be repaired. CSIR was requested by Halcrow on behalf of DFID, UK to assess the condition of the breakwater by undertaking aerial photographic, diving and bathymetric surveys. This paper discusses the results of these surveys and comments on the performance of the breakwater.
