| Abstract: | Mohamed Taib bin Osman was the second Malaysian Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malaya in Pantai Valley, which was founded in 1961. The university had only four faculties — Arts, Science, Engineering and Agriculture — and was inadequately equipped to meet the developmental needs of a newly independent nation. Taib Osman joined it at its birth and witnessed its transformation into a national university producing competent and skilled graduates in various fields of endeavour. He retired as its Vice-Chancellor after 34 years of distinguished academic service. He created a precedent by promoting 30 academics to professors in order to avert a brain drain into the private sector.
